Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Rams signed safety Quentin Lake to a three-year contract extension. Now entering his fifth season in the NFL and with the Rams, Lake continues to be one of the biggest leaders on the team this season.
Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula described Lake as a "coach on the field" and the "glue" of the team's defense.
"He's a linchpin and the glue of our defense," Shula said, per the team's official website . "He wears so many hats for us. He's such a great player at all different levels of the defense. Communicating and the smarts and everything like that, we do see him like a coach on the field. For us as coaches to be able to collaborate with him, but they always want to hear it from a player's perspective of how we're playing certain things and he definitely provides that for us."
Going into training camp, Lake is fully healthy after dislocating his elbow in a Week 11 victory against the Seattle Seahawks last season. He underwent surgery in November on his elbow before returning just in time for the Rams' playoff run.
Although Lake is considered the primary leader of the Rams' secondary, he is learning from two of his new teammates.
Cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson won back-to-back Super Bowl titles with the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Rams this offseason. Lake, who has yet to play in a Super Bowl, told reporters he values the perspectives and experiences of McDuffie and Watson.
"I always try to make it a space where they feel comfortable," Lake said. "Two great additions to our team, I want to know, 'Hey, what was your perspective on this? What was your mindset when you guys went all the way two times in a row?' And I opened the floor to them because I haven't (won two Super Bowls). They've done it. And I'm just making sure that each and every time that I can communicate with them, I'm making sure that the space and environment is a space where they can grow and become even better players."
The Rams will play its first preseason game against the Chiefs on Aug. 15 at Arrowhead Stadium.
