Florida State transfer SF Chauncey Wiggins commits to Gonzaga after judge’s order

Florida State transfer forward Chauncey Wiggins has committed to Gonzaga , according to On3’s Joe Tipton . He played the 2026 season at FSU after transferring from Clemson , but entered the transfer portal this cycle.

Wiggins was a player to watch for a potential fifth year of eligibility, On3 previously reported . A Colorado judge granted a class-wide preliminary injunction last week, which declared the Class of 2022 eligible for the 2026 season pending an NCAA appeal, opened the door for him to possibly return to college basketball.

The judge’s order stated players who were returning could only play for their previous team, meaning they could not enter the portal outside of the window. However, Wiggins hit the open market in April after one season at FSU.

Chauncey Wiggins appeared in 32 games for Florida State last season, including 30 starts. He averaged a career-high 13.3 points while adding 3.9 rebounds per game, as well. That came after three seasons at Clemson, where he took on a starting role in 2024-25 when he started 26 out of 34 games played. That season, Wiggins averaged 8.3 points and 2.9 rebounds.

Judge Charlotte Sweeney’s order came after the NCAA announced the implementation of its 5-year, age-based eligibility rule. Under the new guidelines, athletes will have a five-year eligibility clock beginning with their 19th birthday or when they enroll in college, whichever occurs sooner. However, athletes from the Class of 2022 – which just completed their fourth seasons – would not be “grandfathered” in under the new rules.

As a result, the NCAA faced multiple lawsuits, and Sweeney’s ruling was for the entire class. However, she later clarified her ruling and said the transfer rules would not enjoined, meaning those athletes could not enter the portal. Additionally, roster limits in place under the House v. NCAA settlement also remain in effect, meaning schools cannot go beyond that figure if athletes decide to come back.

“The Court’s order does not enjoin the operation of transfer rules,” Sweeney wrote in the order, issued Aug. 2. “As the plain language of the preliminary injunction order and this order make clear, the Court’s injunction concerns only the implementation of the Rule (as defined in the preliminary injunction order) and any Bylaw that prohibits Plaintiffs and Class Members from competing in a fifth season of collegiate athletics.”

While a major decision, Sweeney’s ruling is not necessarily final. The NCAA, as expected, is appealing it and hoping for a stay of the injunction. The governing body also issued a clarification which stated any athlete who signed a pro contract will not be eligible under terms of the judge’s order.
