Sergio Perez in Talks With Williams as Carlos Sainz’s Future Hangs in the Balance

Sergio Perez’s highly anticipated return to the Formula 1 grid hasn’t exactly gone to plan. Now, just over halfway through the 2026 season, the Mexican veteran is reportedly already looking for an exit strategy—and his management team has their sights set on Williams .

According to a recent report from Autosport , Perez’s management has held preliminary talks with the Grove-based squad. While the situation is fluid, the report notes that an opening at Williams is entirely dependent on what Carlos Sainz decides to do regarding his own future.

But to understand why Perez might be looking to jump ship, you need only look at the current state of his team.

When Cadillac entered the sport as the 11th team for 2026, they opted for an experienced lineup by signing Perez—who had previously parted ways with Red Bull at the end of 2024—and Valtteri Bottas . However, the inaugural season for the American outfit has been an absolute nightmare. The team has failed to score a single point, and across the first 11 Grands Prix, Perez has suffered a staggering four DNFs.

Given the massive reliability issues and lack of pace from Cadillac’s MAC-26 chassis, it makes perfect sense that Perez’s camp is actively putting feelers out across the paddock to secure a more competitive seat for 2027.

However, Perez’s potential lifeline at Williams hinges completely on Carlos Sainz .

Sainz joined Williams for the 2025 season and delivered an impressive campaign, securing two podiums and helping the team finish fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. But the 2026 season has been a massive reality check. The FW48 arrived late, overweight, and woefully off the pace. Williams team principal James Vowles has already admitted that 2026 is essentially a write-off because of unfixable handling characteristics, noting that the team is shifting its primary focus toward 2027.

With the team’s current performance slump proving to be “a bad year” for the Spanish driver, he might be evaluating other options up and down the grid.

If Sainz decides he doesn’t want to stick around for Vowles’ long-term rebuild and vacates his seat, Williams will immediately need a proven, experienced driver to step into the gap.
