Fantasy Football: What do we make of the enigmatic Emeka Egbuka in Year 2?

The first five weeks of Emeka Egbuka’s NFL career were ridiculous. Not “good for a rookie.” Not “promising.” Ridiculous. Egbuka caught 25 passes for 445 yards and five touchdowns during that stretch, averaging 17.4 half-PPR points per game. For a moment, it looked like Tampa Bay had found the next Ohio State wide receiver ready to immediately take over the NFL.

We’ve seen Garrett Wilson. We’ve seen Chris Olave. Jaxon Smith-Njigba took a little longer to get rolling, but we know what that Ohio State wide receiver pipeline has become.

Egbuka looked like he might be the chosen one.

Then everything changed.

From Week 6 through the end of the regular season, Egbuka caught 38 passes for 493 yards and just one touchdown. His half-PPR scoring fell to 6.2 points per game. That made his rookie season one of the clearest tale-of-two-halves performances we saw from any fantasy-relevant player last year.

The question going into 2026 is thusly pretty simple.

Which version of Emeka Egbuka are we getting?

I actually think that is the wrong question.

The better question is, what changed after those first five games? Because when you dig into the usage, I don’t think Tampa Bay’s opinion of Egbuka changed much at all.

He finished his rookie season with 127 targets, 63 receptions, 938 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He was second among rookies in receiving yards and finished fifth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. That’s already a strong rookie season, but the final numbers don’t really tell the whole story.

During his scorching start, Egbuka commanded a 22.1% target share. From Week 6 through the end of the season, when his fantasy production collapsed, his target share actually increased to 23.1%. His first-read share over that stretch was 28.9%.

The production disappeared. The role didn’t.

That is the part of Egbuka’s rookie season I keep coming back to.

His yards per route run fell from 2.71 during the opening stretch to 1.50 afterward. He went from averaging 89 receiving yards per game to 41. That is a massive efficiency collapse, but there isn’t much evidence that Tampa Bay decided Egbuka couldn’t play or stopped trying to get him the football.

There are much easier explanations.

Egbuka injured his hamstring in Week 6 against San Francisco and played through it. Mike Evans eventually returned. Chris Godwin worked his way back into the offense. Jalen McMillan returned late in the season. Then Baker Mayfield injured his shoulder in Week 12, right as Egbuka was entering his worst stretch.

And then there is something much harder to quantify: being a rookie.

We hear players talk about this every year after their first NFL season. The college calendar is over, their bodies are telling them the season should be finished but there are still NFL games left to play. You’re practicing more. You’re playing more. You’re hurt. You’re tired. Everybody you’re facing is bigger, faster and better.

You don’t really know what that grind feels like until you’ve gone through it.

I think Egbuka hit that wall.

Now he’s been through it once, and Year 2 is going to look very different around him.

Mike Evans is no longer in Tampa Bay. Godwin is another year older. McMillan is coming back from injury. The Buccaneers used a first-round pick on Egbuka for a reason and there is very little doubt that they want him to ascend into a true No. 1 wide receiver role.

The interesting part is how that role develops.

Fantasy managers love vacated targets. Mike Evans leaves Tampa Bay, therefore somebody has to inherit his targets.

Sure. But NFL offenses don’t work like an Excel spreadsheet.

Players have roles. Godwin has a role. He’s at his best operating from the slot, working the middle of the field and creating after the catch. There should be additional opportunities available to him without Evans. The same can be true for McMillan, Tez Johnson and the other pieces in Tampa Bay.

But I’m not sure Egbuka has a clearly defined box.

And I mean that as a compliment.

Tampa Bay is planning to settle him primarily into the Z receiver position under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, but that doesn’t make him a stationary outside receiver. He can win underneath. He can work the intermediate areas. We watched him generate explosive plays downfield as a rookie. He can be moved into the slot, used in motion or deployed outside depending on formation and matchup.

Egbuka has ‘positionless-role upside’ in 2026

That is what makes Egbuka so intriguing to me. He isn’t simply the player who benefits because Evans is gone. He has positionless-role upside inside this offense.

Robinson also gives Tampa Bay another interesting variable. He becomes the Buccaneers’ third offensive coordinator in three seasons after Liam Coen in 2024 and Josh Grizzard in 2025, but this change doesn’t scare me as much as that sounds.

Robinson comes from Sean McVay’s coaching tree and already has history with Mayfield from their time together with the Rams. There should be familiar concepts here, particularly the play-action elements that helped unlock one of Mayfield’s best seasons when Coen was running Tampa’s offense in 2024.

There is pressure on everybody. Mayfield wants another big season. Robinson has plenty to prove. Tampa Bay expects to compete for the playoffs.

And if this offense is going to reach its ceiling, No. 2 has to be a major part of it.

My current median projection for Egbuka is 130 targets, 76 receptions, 1,020 yards and around seven to eight touchdowns. That comes out to roughly 10.9 half-PPR points per game.

It’s a good projection. It isn’t an insane projection.
