Buffalo Bills could still pull off a trade for DT Vita Vea before Week 1

NFL training camps are heating up, and so is the rumor mill regarding Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, who recently asked the team for a trade. In the last year of his current deal set to pay him $18 million for the 2026 NFL season, Vea is now unhappy with that figure after the market was recently reset.

Despite Vea’s request, Tampa Bay’s front office is on record as saying he will not be traded. However, not everyone is convinced that’s true. In an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Shefter said that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bucs’ stance change in the coming weeks if “Vea continues to be dug in, and (he thinks) Vea will continue to be dug in.”

The 31-year-old two-time Pro Bowler has been a top-tier defensive lineman for Tampa Bay since being drafted by the Buccaneers 12th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Though good, his individual stats don’t even accurately paint the best picture of his impact. Just how important has Vea’s presence been to the Buccaneers? As shared by McAfee and company, since 2018 (Vea’s rookie season) Tampa Bay’s defense has “allowed the fewest yards (65.5/game) and 1st downs (3.9/game) on between-the-tackle runs.”

It’s obvious that the Buffalo Bills could benefit by adding someone of Vea’s ability to their defense. But there are some reasons for pause. First of all, is the financial strain — where having to account for his $18 million on this year’s salary books is a tough ask. Not impossible given the right moves, but tough. Second on that front is coming to terms with Vea on a new deal, likely also key to his playing a complete 2026 season.

Yes, the financial ramifications aren’t all there is to consider. Yes, under prior head coach Sean McDermott, Buffalo had picked up a troubling recurrent trend of suspect run defense. Vea would almost single-handedly solve that issue. However, we don’t know what Buffalo’s new defensive coordinator, Jim Leonhard, has in store with his 3-4 base system. It’s possible that the Bills’ current defensive line roster is set to surprise as run defenders, or that the system overall creates the type of havoc to negate an opponent’s rushing onslaught.

The Bills have a fairly crowded defensive tackle group, and adding Vea likely means giving up on someone president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane selected in any one of several recent drafts. Does that make sense in this scenario? What starter/significant contributor among Ed Oliver, Deone Walker, T.J. Sanders, DeWayne Carter, Landon Jackson, Zane Durant, Phidarian Mathis, Tommy Akingbesote, Zion Logue, or Kody Huisman would Buffalo be willing to cut loose? That’s on top of whatever in the way of draft pick compensation Tampa Bay demands.

The hard truth is that at 31, Vea’s best years could be in the rearview mirror. Sure, his pretty good may still be better than someone else’s great. Importantly, though Vea is a grizzled vet, he’d enter pretty far behind the eight ball if traded to the Bills today (and that’s assuming they manage to get a new deal done).

Despite all of that above, it’s almost guaranteed that Beane has already contacted the Bucs to see what’s happening with Vea, because he always checks in on talented players. At this point, it still feels like a pipe dream for Buffalo to land Vea. The money, the new contract, and the roster management, the lack of time in the system… it’s a lot to overcome.

Perhaps the only question needing asked is whether or not Vita Vea is the one player to take the Bills over the top, sending quarterback Josh Allen and the franchise to its first-ever Super Bowl victory. Anything short of an emphatic “yes” should give One Bills Drive pause.
