Nets' 2026 NBA offseason regarded as "overhyped" heading into August

The Brooklyn Nets made some interesting moves this offseason as they sought to improve one of the youngest rosters in the NBA by adding more veterans into the fold. Brooklyn was coming off a disappointing 20-62 record during the 2025-26 campaign and as a result, they traded for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle. Some people around the league are not sold on the Nets ' summer, however.

"The Nets did solid work this summer. Randle is an excellent innings-eater for a team with no incentive to lose any longer," Zach Buckley wrote for Bleacher Report when discussing Brooklyn's offseason and how effective it has been. The outlet regarded the Nets' summer move as "overhyped" and Buckley gave some insight into why that word was used to describe Brooklyn's offseason business.

"Ellis is a fine three-and-D contributor. And while Brown has some boom-or-bust in his profile, Brooklyn was right to wager on his potentially special skill set," Buckley continued. "That said, the Nets had the resources to take bigger swings this summer, and for a while, it sounded like that was the plan. They shifted away from a tanking mentality and perhaps positioned themselves to gauge where this group is before placing any high-rolling bets, but this wasn't exactly the big identity change it was billed to be."

In addition to acquiring Randle, the Nets also signed guard Keon Ellis and center Mo Wagner in free-agency while re-signing center Day'Ron Sharpe and forward Josh Minott. Outside of those moves, Brooklyn also added more youth to the roster by selecting three players in the 2026 NBA Draft, led by guard Mikel Brown Jr., whom the franchise took with the No. 6 overall pick.

Along the way, the Nets lost key rotation pieces in center Nic Claxton, who was traded to the Chicago Bulls in the Randle deal, and forward Ziaire Williams, who signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in free-agency. Ultimately, time will tell how much Brooklyn improved this offseason through the moves that they made, but it seems like there are some who aren't sold on their summer at the moment.
