NASCAR Standings After Indianapolis: Denny Hamlin Pulls Away as Playoff Battle Tightens

The Brickyard 400 reshuffled the NASCAR Cup Series standings in several key areas, with Denny Hamlin extending his championship lead, Carson Hocevar cracking the top five, and Ryan Preece inching closer to the Chase cut line.

The Brickyard 400 produced a first-time crown jewel winner in Corey Heim , but one of the biggest beneficiaries of Sunday’s race wasn’t standing in Victory Lane.

Denny Hamlin quietly strengthened his grip on the NASCAR Cup Series points lead, using a fifth-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to extend his advantage over Tyler Reddick as the regular season enters its final stretch.

Behind him, the battle throughout the top 16 tightened considerably. Carson Hocevar and Chase Briscoe each made significant gains inside the top 10, Joey Logano surged four spots, and Ryan Preece moved one step closer to climbing back above the Chase cut line.

Denny Hamlin creates his biggest points lead of the season

Hamlin entered Indianapolis leading Reddick by 40 points. He left with an 84-point advantage after collecting 44 points with his fifth-place finish.

The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran now sits atop the standings with 886 points, while Reddick remains second at 802 despite finishing 10th in the Brickyard 400.

Ryan Blaney continues to hold third with 766 points, followed by Ty Gibbs at 751.

Perhaps the biggest mover near the front of the standings was Hocevar. After scoring a ninth-place finish one day after winning the pole, the Spire Motorsports driver climbed three positions into fifth with 638 points, moving ahead of Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe and Kyle Larson.

Briscoe also enjoyed one of the weekend’s biggest jumps, gaining three positions to seventh after finishing fourth at Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, Larson slipped two spots to eighth after an early exit left him 39th in the final running order, while Christopher Bell dropped one position to 10th despite finishing second.

Joey Logano gains ground as Chase bubble tightens

The biggest jump inside the Chase field belonged to Joey Logano.

The three-time Cup Series champion climbed four positions to 13th after his third-place finish, giving him 545 points entering next weekend.

Bubba Wallace slipped one position to 14th, while Shane van Gisbergen remained 15th. Austin Cindric continues to occupy the final provisional Chase spot in 16th with 518 points, but his cushion continues to shrink.

Ryan Preece gained one position to 17th after charging from 34th on the starting grid to finish eighth in the Brickyard 400. The RFK Racing driver now trails Cindric by just 38 points with four races remaining before the Chase field is set.

Brad Keselowski remains 19th despite his sixth-place finish, while Todd Gilliland climbed one position to 23rd after also capturing NASCAR’s inaugural $1 million In-Season Challenge title at Indianapolis.

With only four races left before the Chase begins, every position and every stage point is becoming increasingly valuable as the fight for the final postseason spots intensifies.
