Richard Hughes was expected to massively upgrade Liverpool's first-team squad this summer.

Before the transfer window even opened, the Anfield outfit were linked with that many players that it was hard to figure out who their main targets were.

And, if we're being honest, that filled fans with a lot of excitement.

This excitement was constantly being built up towards the latter end of the 2025-26 season and, now we're into the final month of the summer window, fans are underwhelmed.

Only two new faces have been added to Liverpool's ranks and, even though the rumour mill is still going into overdrive, no moves have come to fruition.

However, that hasn't stopped even more players being linked with an Anfield switch with the Reds now eyeing a move for a World Cup star.

Djed Spence wants to join Liverpool

Around a month or go, Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Liverpool had been eyeing a move for Djed Spence since 2023 .

The Englishman is the perfect profile of player that the Reds need to add to their ranks and, thanks to his performances in the 2026 World Cup, his quality has been proven to the world.

Despite the Reds eyeing a move for the Englishman, it was unclear whether a move would ever come to fruition, especially with how important he's been to Tottenham over the past couple of seasons.

But now, as per a fresh update from Anfield Sector, the 25-year-old now wants to join Liverpool.

"Liverpool have an interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence," they wrote .

"Spence is said to be extremely receptive to the idea of a move to Liverpool.

"Andoni Iraola has defensive concerns around the current right-backs.

"Not the only name under consideration so no clarity whether progresses but definite interest even if downplayed."

Djed Spence is literally the perfect transfer for Liverpool

Although Liverpool's attack needs some serious work doing to it, their defence also neds surgery.

Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are way too injury-prone to be seen as valid options for Liverpool to use and, since Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are both returning from long-term lay-offs, it's unclear how long it'll take them to get back up to speed.

Of course, Virgil van Dijk is just a man mountain so his place in Liverpool's squad is fine but, in full-back, things are starting to look a little bit dodgy.

Jeremie Frimpong, Kostas Tsimikas and Milos Kerkez are the Reds' only senior options in those areas at the moment.

Of course, Luke Chambers , Owen Beck and Calvin Ramsay all have an outside chance of featuring for Liverpool in those roles this term but, if they want to get back to the top of the table and start fighting for silverware again, they need better players than them to choose from.

That's why Spence is an ideal match . He was one of England's best players at the 2026 World Cup and, he has also had plenty of Premier League experience.

It's unclear how much a deal would cost Liverpool to get over the line but, thanks to his versatility and experience, he more or less ticks every box for what the Reds need.

Here's hoping that Tottenham and Liverpool can come to an agreement and get a deal over the line.
