Cubs Minor League Wrap: Kade Snell goes off in 11-8 South Bend win

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs got run over by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees), 11-0.

I don’t know why anyone wants the highlights of this one, but starter Jordan Wicks got the loss atter allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. However, only two of the runs Wicks allowed were earned. Wicks walked two and struck out one.

Iowa had six hits, all singles. Right fielder Greg Jones was 2 for 3.

Catcher Owen Ayers was 1 for 3 with a walk and he went two-for-two throwing out runners trying to steal.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies got speared by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins), 5-1.

The Smokies got a really good start from Brody McCullough , but he was a victim of non-support and got the loss. McCullough allowed just one run on two hits over five innings. The one run came on a home run in the fourth inning. McCullough walked one and struck out five.

Third baseman Jefferson Rojas went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored the only Smokies run in the eighth inning on a passed ball.

Catcher Miguel Useche was 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs sank the Lake County Captains (Guardians), 11-8.

Nazier Mulé pitched the first 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. But Mulé did strike out a career-high eight while walking only one, although he did also hit a batter.

Brayden Spears did not pitch well, but he got the win anyways. Spears gave up three runs on three hits over three innings. Spears gave up two two-run home runs, with one of the runs being charged to Mulé. Spears walked two and struck out five.

Ethan Bell struck out the side in order in the ninth for the save.

Center fielder Kade Snell homered twice tonight by the third inning. The first came with the bases empty in the second and the second one was a two-run home run in the third. Snell went 2 for 5 and now has five home runs on the year.

Catcher Logan Poteet also went deep twice. The first one came back-to-back with Snell in the second inning. The second one was a solo shot in the eighth. Poteet now has 18 home runs this year and four with South Bend. Poteet went 2 for 4 with a walk.

Third baseman Matt Halbach hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, his seventh on the season. Halbach went 2 for 5 and drove in two.

First baseman Josiah Hartshorn didn’t homer, but he hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning and a two-run double in the seventh. Hartshorn went 2 for 5 with a walk and the four RBI. He scored one run.

Second baseman Ty Southisene , starting for the first time since he went on the injured list in late June, was 3 for 6 and scored once.

Left fielder Jose Escobar went 2 for 4 and was hit by a pitch. He scored on Snell’s second home run.

DH Kane Kepley went 1 for 3 with three walks and a stolen base. Kepley scored two runs.

Right fielder Geri Lubo went 2 for 5 with a steal.

Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost to the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 9-6.

The Pelicans wasted a great start from Braylon Myers , who pitched five scoreless. Myers scattered five hits, all singles. He struck out eight and walked no one.

David Bracho threw a scoreless sixth inning, but then he got hammered for five runs in the seventh and took the loss. Three of those runs came on a home run. Bracho’s final line was five runs on three hits and two walks over two innings. Bracho walked two and struck out four.

Jordan Henriquez gave up a grand slam in the eighth to put this game out of reach.

Jose Silva homered with the bases empty in the second inning. It was Silva’s second Pelicans home run and fourth overall. Silva was a perfect 2 for 2 with two walks. He scored twice.

In his third game with the Birds, first baseman Jan Luis Reyes went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Those were Reyes’ first two hits in Low-A. Reyes drove in two and scored one run.

In his first professional game, third baseman and 14th-round pick Corey Nunez was 2 for 3 with a walk. Nunez scored twice and drove in one.

Center fielder Ethan Conrad went 1 for 5 with a two-run double.
