Adonai Mitchell, Omar Cooper Jr. have breakout potential for Jets

The New York Jets know exactly who their top wide receiver is, and so does everybody else. Garrett Wilson has established himself as one of the NFL's premier playmakers, giving the offense a dependable No. 1 target capable of changing games with his route running, athleticism and ability to create explosive plays.

The next challenge isn't replacing Wilson or asking him to do more. There are two others. One was finding him competency at quarterback. The other was finding him help. New York hopes they have found both with quarterback Geno Smith and a pair of complementary weapons who can help the passing game reach another level.

Adonai Mitchell and first-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. each have an opportunity to become those players, giving the Jets a chance to build one of the more intriguing young receiving trios in the AFC. Mitchell's journey to New York came in one of the biggest moves of the Jets' offseason.

On Nov. 4, 2025, the Jets acquired the young receiver, along with first-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 NFL drafts, from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner .

Although his production didn't immediately jump off the stat sheet, there were encouraging signs. Mitchell finished the 2025 season with 24 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns after joining the Jets.

His biggest moment came on Nov. 30, when he hauled in a 52-yard touchdown reception from Tyrod Taylor during a 27-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons .

Now entering the season with a full offseason in the organization and greater familiarity with the offense, Mitchell appears well positioned to take another step forward.

While Mitchell enters the season looking to build on flashes of promise, Cooper begins his NFL career carrying the expectations that come with being a Round 1 selection. The Jets didn't invest premium draft capital simply to develop him for the future. They drafted Cooper because they believe his athleticism, versatility and playmaking ability can help the offense sooner rather than later.

For a team looking to create more explosive plays, Cooper's development could become one of the most important storylines of the season.

The Jets need more than one playmaker

Wilson has proven he can carry the load as the focal point of the passing game. The Jets don't need Mitchell or Cooper to become another No. 1 receiver. They simply need them to become consistent, dependable contributors who force opposing defenses to account for more than one player.

If Mitchell develops into the reliable outside weapon the Jets envisioned when they acquired him and Cooper quickly adapts to the NFL game, New York's receiving corps suddenly looks much deeper than it has in recent years. Instead of leaning almost exclusively on Wilson, the offense would feature three receivers capable of making defenses pay in different ways.

The Jets have spent years searching for answers at wide receiver beyond their top target. This season, they may already have them on the roster. Garrett Wilson remains the star, but Adonai Mitchell and Omar Cooper Jr. have legitimate opportunities to emerge as the complementary pieces that transform New York's passing attack from good to genuinely difficult to defend.
