The New England Patriots authored one of the NFL’s most remarkable transformations last season. Mike Vrabel took over a team that had finished 4-13 in consecutive years and immediately guided it to a 14-3 record, an AFC East championship and an appearance in Super Bowl LX. New England’s 10-win improvement tied the largest single-season jump in NFL history.

Repeating that success could prove even more difficult than achieving it the first time.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell included the Patriots in his annual breakdown of the NFL teams most likely to decline during the 2026 season. That prediction might sound harsh after New England strengthened its roster over the offseason. In reality, it says as much about the extraordinary height of last season’s success as it does about any concern surrounding the current Patriots.

Patriots Set Nearly Impossible Standard

New England did not simply sneak into the playoffs during Vrabel’s first season. The Patriots won 14 games, captured their first AFC East title since 2019 and advanced through three postseason rounds. They defeated the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium before earning a 10-7 road victory over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

Their run ended with a 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, but the Patriots still finished 17-4 between the regular season and playoffs.

Maintaining that pace is incredibly difficult.

The Patriots would need another 14-win season merely to avoid the statistical decline Barnwell predicted. Even a 12-5 finish and another division title technically would qualify as regression. Barnwell acknowledged that New England earned its way to the Super Bowl. His concerns are rooted more in the sustainability of the Patriots’ rapid rise and the circumstances surrounding it.

New England benefited from a favorable schedule in 2025. That will not be the case this season, when the Patriots are set to face one of the NFL’s more demanding slates. They also must prove their young core can handle the transition from surprising contender to targeted opponent.

New England Added Help For Drake Maye

The Patriots did not spend the offseason acting as though last year’s roster was already complete. Their biggest move was acquiring star receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown gives Drake Maye an established No. 1 target capable of winning against physical coverage and creating explosive plays after the catch.

New England also added Romeo Doubs to a receiving group that underwent significant changes following the departures of Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte. Maye remains the most compelling reason to believe the Patriots can withstand some of the regression indicators Barnwell identified.

The quarterback emerged as one of the NFL’s brightest young stars in his second season. He helped transform New England’s offense and earned second-team All-Pro honors while leading the franchise back to the Super Bowl. If Maye takes another step forward, the Patriots could become a better overall team without matching last season’s 14 victories.

That distinction matters.

A Decline Would Not Necessarily Mean Disaster

ESPN’s projection should not be interpreted as a prediction that New England will collapse or miss the playoffs. The Patriots enter 2026 with a franchise quarterback, an accomplished head coach and a roster that appears more talented in several important areas.

They also will begin the season with dramatically different expectations. New England was considered an ascending team last summer, but few analysts anticipated a Super Bowl appearance. The Patriots now will receive opponents’ full attention each week while attempting to navigate a more difficult schedule.

Buffalo also remains a major obstacle in the AFC East. ESPN’s Football Power Index previously gave the Bills a 67.6% chance to win the division, compared with 30.6% for New England.

Barnwell’s warning ultimately presents the Patriots with a new challenge.

Vrabel already proved he could revive a struggling franchise. Now he and Maye must show New England’s breakthrough was the start of something sustainable, even if the final record does not reach last season’s historic standard.
