Packers WR Savion Williams shows signs of life with impressive practices

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Savion Williams had an understated rookie season, and after a quiet start to training camp ahead of Year 2, it looked like he was in danger of slipping through the cracks.

A unique wide receiver at 6-4, 220 pounds, the Packers mostly used him as a gadget player as a rookie, finding creative ways to put the ball in his hands a couple of times per game. He had 11 rushing attempts to only 10 targets, and his average depth of target was just 1.2 yards.

That tracked with how he was often utilized in college, but the results from scrimmage and as a return man on special teams were mixed during his first year as a pro. He was not helped by multiple injuries, including a shoulder issue he dealt with in training camp, and later a foot injury he played through.

There was a risk that Williams could be one of the classic players who is a favorite of scouts, who see his freakish size, athleticism, and potential versatility, but coaches do not quite know what to do with.

Even as of a few days ago, he had arguably the quietest receiver of the entire group, with players at the back of the roster like Isaiah Neyor and J. Michael Sturdivant making more splash plays.

With Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed missing a couple of practices with injury – the pair are now back, as of Tuesday – opportunity knocked for Williams, and he grabbed it with both hands.

He was the star of practice on Sunday, catching a bunch of passes from Jordan Love throughout the day as well as a 60-yard touchdown pass from Kyle McCord.

— Green Bay Packers (@packers) August 9, 2026 Williams is still raw as a true route runner, partially due to his usage in college, and there were some unflattering clips of him in one on ones earlier in camp.

He is never likely to be as crisp or refined as a Matthew Golden, but he can provide real value to the offense, not only as a YAC merchant, but also as a downfield threat, using his rare combination of size and speed.

His ability to win jump balls was all over his college tape, was evident on a key catch against the New York Giants last season, and has also flashed during camp, as he caught a back shoulder slot fade for a touchdown on Family Night.

— Alexander Basara (@Basaraski) August 8, 2026 Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Williams’ teammate Bo Melton was effusive in his praise for the second-year receiver.

Melton said: “He’s big, he’s strong, but the good thing about (Savion) that I love about him is his poise. The way he plays the game is really good, he could be a great player. He knows that, we know that, and he’s shown that a lot, especially a day like yesterday, he had an amazing day."

After stringing together some impressive practices, Williams will be hoping to be more of a factor in the Packers offense in Year 2.
