It is basically NFL training camp season and that is very exciting for obvious reasons. Consider that this is the last weekend where there will be no Dallas Cowboys activity of any time through the end of this year and, well, exciting is sort of putting it lightly.
Football in general is running right down the track. Most conferences in the world of college football have had their media days and soon enough our Saturdays will be full, too.
Over this past offseason there was one storyline that bounced back and forth between the collegiate and professional aspects of football as Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby fought to be able to play after gambling allegations led to a host of issues for him. At one point Sorsby was reportedly considering entering the supplemental draft, but he ultimately elected to back out and will be eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft at large.
It isn’t low-hanging fruit to say that the Cowboys may be interested in him. ESPN’s Todd Archer wrote about the unusually quiet offseason for the Cowboys , and when he did he revealed that the team was very interested in Sorsby around the time of the supplemental draft situation.
When Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby put his name in the supplemental draft, multiple sources said the Cowboys had high interest even with the gambling issues that surrounded Sorsby. Prescott is signed through 2028, so an attempt to potentially find his successor at what could have been a lower-than-expected price would have made sense even if it drew added attention to the Cowboys’ quarterback room. Ultimately, the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft — denying Sorsby’s eligibility this year.
It makes sense for the Cowboys to begin looking for a successor to Dak Prescott. Dak is, after all, the longest-tenured player on the team and he is the longest-tenured starting quarterback in the entire league with respect to the team he plays for (Aaron Rodgers obviously isn’t playing for the Green Bay Packers). Practically speaking, financially more than anything, Prescott is at least going to be quarterbacking the Cowboys through the 2027 season and looking at future options is the responsible thing to do.
On the subject of 2027, the draft class that Sorsby is a part of is expected to be particularly deep at quarterback in a way that recent classes haven’t been. The top of it may feature Texas’ Arch Manning, but there will be options all the way through. Perhaps we can consider this a sign that Dallas is going to seriously consider drafting a quarterback next year.
Maybe it will wind up being Sorsby. Who knows. What do you think?
