How Nixa quarterback Adam McKnight has improved his game entering senior year

NIXA — Adam McKnight is hungrier than ever.

This should scare Nixa’s opposition.

After back-to-back state championship runner-up finishes, McKnight wants the ultimate prize.

“We want to finish the job,” the senior quarterback said. “My first state game, I did alright. The second one, I did a little bit better. Getting that far has prepared us for this season and this moment.”

Experience is crucial in high school football. The more varsity reps at an earlier age, the more likely success is to follow come senior season.

McKnight is not only the top quarterback in Southwest Missouri but also ranks among the top quarterbacks in the entire state.

McKnight threw for 1,819 yards and 23 touchdowns. He completed 67% of his passes, while throwing just three interceptions in 2025. He also rushed for 695 yards and 11 touchdowns.

All the great players find ways to improve, and McKnight is no different. His deep ball has always been one of his skills. This spring, he worked on quick strikes and timely passing.

“My decision-making has gotten a lot better,” McKnight said. “My quick game, getting the ball out and getting it on my receiver’s chest. I’ve improved quite a bit in that aspect.”

McKnight’s greatest strength will always be his leadership skills. Nixa head coach John Perry explained that McKnight’s competitiveness is unmatched. He has rarely coached a player who wants to win as badly as he does. But he has grown the most by being a great teammate.

“He is as competitive as any human that I’ve ever been around,” Perry said. “The elite are extremely competitive. He’s also a guy that has become a leader. He has made himself a leader.”

During the first state championship game, McKnight was not the leader he is today.

Experience goes a long way, and the Nixa quarterback is using it to his advantage.

“When he was a freshman, he was competitive,” Perry said. “I would not say that he was the most phenomenal leader of men. As he has grown up, he has adopted the fact that has to be a leader for other people.”

In May, McKnight committed to play college football at Missouri State. He was originally offered under former head coach Ryan Beard. Once Casey Woods came into the fold, his staff made McKnight feel welcome, which was all he needed to commit to the Bears.

— Adam Mcknight (@amcknight08) May 19, 2026 McKnight has been following the Bears since he was a child. Last season, he went to almost every home game. To represent his hometown college team will fill him with pride, he said.

“The coaches have been awesome. Coach Woods has already done so much in the little time that he’s been there,” McKnight said. “Coach (Mark) Cala has been great to me. It has really meant a lot to me and my family.”

Nixa opens its regular season against Carthage on Friday, Aug. 28 at home.
