William “Buck” Godfrey impacted hundreds of high school football players and students during his decades-long career.

Godfrey died on Aug. 1 at the age of 83 . The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame coach coached and taught at Southwest DeKalb High School from 1983 until 2012 and won a state title in 1995.
Godfrey’s family tells Channel 2 Action News that they have established the William Buck Godfrey Legacy Scholarship.
“Coach William ‘Buck’ Godfrey spent more than three decades at Southwest DeKalb High School as a head football coach, English teacher, and author. He led his teams to 273 victories and a state championship, while sending hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarship. This fund carries his work forward by supporting students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” his family says.

The scholarship will go toward students who exemplify character, integrity, leadership, strong work ethic, resiliency and other qualities that Godfrey showed.
Applications for the scholarship will open in March 2027.
Godfrey’s family will announce more details during a celebration of life for him in September. The ceremony will be held at the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown Atlanta at 5 p.m. on Sept. 19.
