NEW YORK – Pat Murphy commented before his team's game Aug. 26 that he could really use 27 outs from Dustin May due to a thinned bullpen.
He got one pitch.
After getting smoked in the middle of the back by a 106.0 mph line drive from A.J. Ewing on the very first pitch he threw, May exited the game.
Murphy along with pitching coach Chris Hook and trainer Brad Epstein held a long meeting with May on the mound as he tried to stretch out his back and threw a small handful of warm-up pitches, but ultimately he departed and Robert Gasser entered.
The Brewers bullpen was already in a rough spot coming into the day. Gasser was listed as the starter Aug. 30 but was available out of relief if needed against the New York Mets .
