The Golden State Warriors have not had the offseason they wanted, especially after missing out on LeBron James, who joined the Philadelphia 76ers . The Warriors entered the summer with rumors that they were among the favorites to land both James and Anthony Davis.
However, reality quickly set in as Golden State did not have the roster flexibility to acquire either star. Instead, the Warriors have largely brought back familiar faces this summer.
“The Warriors are officially running it back despite missing the playoffs last season. Golden State re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II this summer,” NBA writer Jake Weinbach posted.
While the offseason has been rather disappointing, there is still some good news for the Warriors. Steph Curry does not appear to be going anywhere, and a contract extension could be on the way.
“What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants. If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal," ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel wrote.
Golden State is not done with the offseason, as the team is still looking to add one or two more players. Blue Man Hoops’ Peter O’Keefe believes the Warriors could sign Bradley Beal.
“The question remains on what version of Beal we'll see moving forward, having averaged only 8.2 points on less than 38% shooting from the floor in six games last season before season-ending hip surgery. If the Warriors (or another team) could get similar production to his last year in Phoenix -- 17.0 points and 3.7 assists on 50/39/80 shooting splits -- that's a worthwhile investment to make on a cheap contract,” O’Keefe wrote.
Beal’s health will be the biggest concern for any team that signs him. However, when healthy, he has proven throughout his career that he can put the ball in the basket. Playing alongside Curry could give Beal plenty of opportunities to get quality looks, especially in an offense built around spacing and perimeter shooting.
Beal has earned $342 million in contracts throughout his career. Golden State has always prioritized offense, and that has been a staple of the franchise for more than a decade. If the Warriors can get a healthy Beal on a cheap contract, he could provide another offensive weapon alongside Curry and give the team some much-needed scoring depth.
