Bill Belichick Hit With Fresh Setback as UNC Faces College Sports Commission Scrutiny
This is the last thing Bill Belichick would’ve expected to happen at UNC . After parting ways with the New England Patriots and watching 31 other NFL teams pass on hiring him, the coaching legend probably envisioned a smoother reset in Chapel Hill. Instead, his first season at UNC has gone off script. A 4-8 debut, a 2-6 ACC record, and more headlines about his personal life than his coaching résumé. And just when it looked like things couldn’t get any messier, another flag was thrown.
Belichick had previously been set to take center stage on Offseason Hard Knocks after NFL Films couldn’t land an NFL team. Now, another off-field issue has surfaced. North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi, one of Belichick’s closest confidants and top aides, has been placed on paid administrative leave by the university, adding yet another twist to an already turbulent offseason.

On Monday, UNC announced that Lombardi had been placed on paid administrative leave, effective immediately, though the school didn’t provide any additional details. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the move stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC football front office employee, with an investigation now underway. The development comes less than five weeks before the Tar Heels kick off Belichick’s second season on Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland.
Lombardi wasn’t just another front-office hire. Reportedly making around $1.5 million per year, he was believed to be the highest-paid general manager in college football. More importantly, he’s been one of Belichick’s most trusted football minds for decades. As per Yahoo Sports , UNC’s football team is being investigated by the College Sports Commission, the entity that handles compliance and enforcement of NCAA and NIL rules, This comes on the heels of the program’s football GM, Mike Lombardi, being placed on paid administrative leave by the university on Monday morning, following a human resources complaint filed by a former football front-office employee.

Their history goes all the way back to the Cleveland Browns, where Lombardi was part of Belichick’s legendary “Star Chamber”—an elite brain trust so respected it earned its own A Football Life episode. Over the years, Lombardi has been with three Super Bowl-winning organizations, including serving as an advisor during the Patriots’ championship runs from 2014 to 2016.
That résumé also came with plenty of confidence. Soon after arriving in Chapel Hill alongside Belichick in December 2024, Lombardi boldly dubbed UNC “the 33rd NFL team” on his podcast—a line that quickly went viral. But after a 4-8 debut season, no players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, and now an HR investigation hanging over the program, that slogan has aged about as poorly as it possibly could.
