Atlanta Falcons opened training camp this week with one of their biggest stars on the sidelines, creating a situation that mirrors what several NFL contenders are dealing with as contract negotiations take center stage.
According to multiple reporters at practice, running back Bijan Robinson did not participate in Wednesday’s session. Robinson was present on the field but was not wearing a helmet or taking part in drills, with video from WSB-TV’s Alison Mastrangelo showing the All-Pro back watching practice from the sideline.
While Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski did not address Robinson’s status during his pre-practice media availability, the absence is widely believed to be related to Robinson seeking a long-term contract extension.
The Falcons find themselves in a position similar to the Detroit Lions , where another elite offensive cornerstone is also looking for a new deal as training camp gets underway. Teams around the league are increasingly facing contract negotiations with young stars before the regular season begins, hoping to avoid prolonged distractions.

Robinson has more than earned the opportunity to negotiate a lucrative extension. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft is coming off a spectacular 2025 campaign that established him as one of the league’s premier offensive weapons. He was named a first-team All-Pro after leading the NFL with 2,298 yards from scrimmage.
On the ground, Robinson rushed for 1,478 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging explosive production throughout the season. He also proved to be one of the league’s most dangerous receiving backs, hauling in 79 receptions for 820 yards and four touchdowns. His all-around dominance earned him his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
Although Robinson remains under contract through the 2027 season after Atlanta exercised his fifth-year option, his elite production has significantly increased his market value. With the Falcons looking to build around one of the NFL’s most dynamic young playmakers, reaching an agreement on a long-term extension could become one of the organization’s top priorities before the regular season begins.
