High school sports are moving full speed ahead in Escambia and Santa Rosa County.
Gulf Breeze volleyball continues to impress in its 8-1 start, topping one of Alabama’s best teams in Gulf Shores on Aug. 26 and one of the panhandle’s best in South Walton on Aug. 27.
Tate and Pensacola Catholic volleyball are also off to undefeated starts, and the Aggies will host Gulf Breeze on Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
High school girls golfers hit the links for the first time this week too, with Jay finishing second in a tri-match against Baker and Central.
Local cross country runners competed at the Pine Forest Eagle Invitational, with Navarre leading area teams with a third place finish.
All that means plenty of nominees for this week’s Florida Power & Light PNJ Girls Athlete of the Week. Last week, Gulf Breeze cross country’s Emery Taylor won the first award for 2026-27 with 60.4 percent of the vote.
Now it’s time to make your voice heard again. Voting closes at 11 a.m Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes. Each weekly winner will be awarded a PNJ Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. An athlete can only win one time per season.
Nominees will be accepted via phone or email, but the poll is decided by PNJ staff. Send nominations by Sunday night.
