The time has come once again to vote for The Star Press East Central Indiana high school Football Player of the Week, brought to you by IU Health.
The reigning Football Player of the Week is Wes-Del running back/defensive back Zach Gillam. Gillam carried the ball four times for a team-high 92 yards and two touchdowns in Wes-Del's 74-0 victory over Tri-Central. He also made three tackles on defense and had an interception, which he returned 51 yards for another touchdown. Gillam received 12,244 out of 23,984 votes cast (51.1%) last week.
This week's poll brings us 10 more nominees — one from each area football team regardless of whether his team won or lost its Week 2 game. To submit nominees for future polls, please email names and statistics for the week to [email protected] by Sunday after each game day.
The poll will remain open until Thursday, Sept. 3, at noon ET. You may vote as many times as you'd like. Please vote using the poll found by scrolling to the bottom of this page — votes submitted via email will not be counted.
Here's a quick look at this week's nominees, listed alphabetically by school:
Brady Bannister, RB/LB, Blackford: Bannister carried the ball 20 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns while also racking up a team-leading 13 tackles on defense in Blackford's 72-36 loss to Wes-Del.
Aven Thomas, RB, Delta: Thomas produced 101 rushing yards on 24 carries in Delta's 7-6 loss to Heritage.
Leighton Brown, RB, Jay County: Brown carried the ball 22 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns in Jay County's 21-19 loss to New Castle.
Grant Linville, DB, Monroe Central: Linville made two tackles and had two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns, in Monroe Central's 46-6 win over Union City.
Doiron Montgomery, WR/DB, Muncie Central: Montgomery had four receptions for 59 yards and caught Muncie Central's only touchdown in a 24-7 loss to Yorktown. He also made three tackles on defense.
Christian St. John, WR/DB, New Castle: St. John hauled in four receptions for 166 yards and scored all three of New Castle's touchdowns in a 21-19 victory over Jay County. He also tied for the team-lead with eight tackles, including one tackle for loss, on defense.
Cash Cowley, RB/DL, Shenandoah: Cowley carried the ball 25 times for 245 yards and three touchdowns in Shenandoah's 40-27 loss to Northeastern. He also made three tackles on defense.
Eli Wright, RB/LB, Wes-Del: Wright racked up 168 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries to lead Wes-Del to a 72-36 victory over Blackford. He also had eight tackles on defense.
Brennen Lanter, WR/DB, Winchester Community: Lanter only had one catch for nine yards on offense, but he added five tackles and hauled in two interceptions on defense in Winchester's 28-14 loss to Knightstown.
Kaden Crumes, WR/DB, Yorktown: Crumes carried the ball six times for 26 yards and a touchdown and added seven receptions for 43 yards and another touchdown in Yorktown's 24-7 win over Muncie Central. He also made three tackles and caught two interceptions on defense and racked up 92 return yards on two kickoff returns.
