But their 2023 NFL season got off to a rough start. The team started 0-3, including an embarrassing 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins . It made pundits and fans wonder whether Payton was the man for the job. Although the Broncos would finish 8-6 down the stretch, the loss to Miami helped kick-start what Payton needed to do to turn the Broncos around.
Speaking with ESPN, Payton got candid about his most lopsided loss. Payton believed that his team needed to get tougher and more physical. He also began evaluating his coaches and players, and the evaluation kept going even after the season. Payton released starting quarterback Russell Wilson in the spring, then drafted Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Two playoff appearances and a top seed in the AFC later, Payton and his Broncos are far removed from the historic loss.
