Over the last few weeks, the Lansing State Journal has unveiled some of the top athletes to come out of Greater Lansing. This is among the final stories in our daily series taking a look at the top 10 male and female athletes from the region. These athletes are determined by more than just high school performance. Accomplishments in college and as a professional were also taken into consideration when determining the area's best.
The athletes are not ranked in order. Here is a look at our latest male athlete.
Muhsin Muhammad
The region has had a few individuals go on to make their marks in the NFL, but Waverly’s Muhsin Muhammad is one of the most impactful football standouts produced by the region.
Muhammad was an all-state running back and linebacker at Waverly in the late 1980s and early 1990s before going on to play at Michigan State. His football career received a boost in his final season at MSU in 1995, when he had 41 catches for 696 yards and two touchdowns. That success helped Muhammad become a second round selection by the Carolina Panthers in the 1996 NFL draft.
Muhammad went on to spend 14 seasons in the NFL and had 860 career receptions for 11,438 yards and 62 touchdowns. Nicknamed “Moose,” Muhammad spent most of his career with the Panthers and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and earned All-Pro honors in 2004. He owns the record for longest reception in Super Bowl history with his 85-yard touchdown grab in a 32-29 loss to New England in Super Bowl XXXVIII in Feb. 2004.
