Appearing on the “ Not Just Football with Cam Heyward ” podcast with former teammate Cam Heyward, Clark recalled the exact moment head coach Mike Tomlin made him feel truly embraced by the franchise. Early in his tenure, Tomlin pulled Clark aside and made a lasting promise.
"Coach T was the first coach in the league that came to me and was like we are going to make sure this feels like home. Like no coach ever did that. No coach ever said hey like this is going to be the spot for you," Clark shared.
That bond was cemented during a 2012 Monday morning film session following a game against Washington, where Clark suffered a concussion. Rather than focusing solely on scheme, Tomlin highlighted six specific plays to show the entire team what true commitment looked like.
"I remember it, he goes, 'I want to show you what he was willing to do.' And it was about six plays from that game of me, like there's one play, the entire pile, I take off running and I just submarine the whole pile," Clark recalled. "Eventually, I got hit behind the head and I was knocked out."
For Clark, being publicly highlighted by Tomlin validated his playing style and earned him the ultimate respect from his teammates.
"That became the thing I loved about football the most. Was that they all knew what I was willing to do?" Clark explained. "It didn't mean I was the most talented, the best player. But what it meant was there is no level of sacrifice for this that is too much for me."
