The Buffalo Bills made a subtle but notable roster move on the second day of training camp, signing veteran Dante Pettis to a one-year deal and waiving Jalen Virgil with a non-football injury designation.
The 30-year-old Pettis brings eight years of NFL experience across four different teams, most recently spending the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He racked up 127 receiving yards on nine catches across eight games in 2025, while also contributing on special teams.
Pettis originally came into the league as a second-round pick (44th overall) with the San Francisco 49ers in the 2018 NFL Draft, where he made an immediate impact as a rookie, catching 27 passes for 467 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per catch.
Since then, he's bounced around the league, spending time with the New York Giants and Chicago Bears before landing with the Saints. Over his NFL career, he's racked up 1,231 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 92 receptions across 66 games.

DJ Moore was the Bills' headline acquisition this offseason, and they've still got Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer, Keon Coleman, and rookie Skyler Bell at the receiver position.
Don't expect Pettis to carve out many offensive snaps barring injuries elsewhere. His value lies more in the return game and the experience he adds to the room.
He posted 169 yards on punt returns and 447 yards on kick returns over his last two seasons in New Orleans, averaging 8.5 yards per punt return and 24.8 yards per kick return.

Pettis is also the NCAA's all-time record-holder with nine punt return touchdowns from his days at Washington. In his final 2017 season with the Huskies, he totaled an FBS-leading 428 yards on 21 punt returns across 13 games, four of which he returned for touchdowns.
For Buffalo, Pettis could very well line up next to Mecole Hardman Jr. in the return game this season.
