The Red Sox are one of the hottest teams in baseball, even without one of their star players. Roman Anthony has been out of action since early May, and his presence in the lineup has been missed. Still, the Red Sox have held it together thanks to multiple win streaks.
Following a few setbacks, when can Red Sox fans expect Anthony to return to the field?
Anthony exited a May 4 game against the Tigers after feeling discomfort in his right wrist. He was diagnosed with a wrist sprain, but it turned into a torn ligament in his ring finger. Unable to properly swing, Anthony was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Dr. Mark Cohen of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University initially stated in June that Anthony's injury was unprecedented and the healing process at the time was unknown. Now in August, things may have progressed for the 22-year-old.

The healing process has advanced to where Anthony can hit off a machine, per interim manager Chad Tracy. The first task is to swing to the point it doesn’t hurt and use a Trajekt machine, which simulates opposing pitchers.
Tracy is optimistic about the first encouraging news we’ve heard about Anthony in a while.
“All things are positive. Let him keep taking steps, temper expectations until he crosses and checks all these boxes, then we’ll see when we can get him here,” Tracy said via MassLive .
“He hit yesterday and today, too. He actually introduced some machine (work) today, which is good. It’s kinda in that phase now where he’s gonna do some of that. He’ll do that for a bit and see how his hand responds. The next thing would be doing some Trajekt, but we just introduced that (machine step).”
Selected 79th in the 2022 MLB Draft, Anthony slashed .292/.396/.463 and hit eight home runs in his rookie season, placing third in ROY voting. He was expected to have a breakout sophomore campaign, especially after showcasing his skills during the World Baseball Classic.
While Anthony has been healing, the Red Sox went from last to baseball’s best team. Boston had a 15-game win streak and recently had a nine-game win streak come to an end. The team traded for Adley Rutschman, adding another big bat to the lineup.
If all goes according to plan, Anthony could potentially join Rutschman in the lineup before the regular season ends.
