The Los Angeles Dodgers landed the biggest name on the trade deadline market, acquiring two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers .
Skubal's status was in question as Detroit remains in contention for a playoff spot, but the Tigers are under .500 and risked losing Skubal in free agency for nothing. Los Angeles has one of the best farm systems in the sport, and it used that strength to add to its already impressive rotation in search of a three-peat.
Skubal's addition makes the Dodgers' rotation one of the most talented in the sport, and potentially one of the most talented in baseball history. However, Los Angeles must hope that injuries don't derail the team's chances down the stretch.

The Dodgers are now flush with starting pitchers, but many of them have dealt with injuries over the course of the season. Most notably, Shohei Ohtani has a biceps injury that has shut him down from pitching, making his return to the mound this year a big question.
Additionally, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are both on the injured list but are expected to return at some point this year. If they are healthy, the Dodgers now have the deepest rotation in baseball, with four combined Cy Young Awards, none of which belong to their ace, Yamamoto.
If healthy, Los Angeles goes seven deep with its rotation, but that's of course not the case. Still, the only pitcher in the rotation without an All-Star Game appearance is Roki Sasaki, and he has settled down midway through his second season as a major league pitcher.
The Dodgers have used a six-man rotation throughout the season, which should make it easier to balance such a deep group of starters.

The Tigers send Skubal to the Dodgers for three prospects, headlined by dynamic outfielder Zyhir Hope. Detroit also gets two pitching prospects, River Ryan and Brady Smith, with Ryan being the better of the two.
Tarik Skubal contract details
Skubal is set to hit free agency at the end of the season, which is why the Tigers traded him in the first place. Skubal is currently making $32 million over the course of the 2026 season, a record high for a player in arbitration before becoming a free agent.
By trading for Skubal, the Dodgers now have a few months to get familiar with him before becoming the likely favorites to sign him to a long-term contract in the offseason.
Blake Snell injury update
Snell had surgery in May to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, and his been on the injured list since. His rehab has progressed well, though, as he has made three rehab starts thus far and is expected to return to the Dodgers' rotation sometime in August .
Tyler Glasnow injury update
Glasnow is on the injured list with back spasms and is currently behind Snell in his rehab progression. Glasnow did start throwing again in the previous few weeks, and the Dodgers expect him to head to a rehab assignment sometime soon, and the veteran should be back in the Dodgers rotation by September.
