According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the two sides "aren't close" in contract negotiations. Granted, Breer did acknowledge that things could quickly change. He also continued to suggest that Gonzalez's tactics could potentially be in line with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, with whom he shares the same agent.
Breer thinks both players are looking for a market-setting deal from their respective teams.
"No, they aren't close right now. That doesn't mean it can't change quickly. These things can change fast," Breer said on NBC Sports Boston's Arbella Early Edition . "I think it is a gesture of good faith that he is practicing, but I think both of these guys are looking for the same thing, which is a market setter on every measure."
Gonzalez has been a full participant at training camp practice despite the ongoing contract negotiations.
The fact that he isn't holding in or holding out for a new deal is good news for the Patriots . Both sides appear determined to work cordially together for an eventual resolution.
Gonzalez has proven to be among the best cornerbacks in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns recently extended veteran corner Denzel Ward on a two-year, $62.2 million deal. That put him ahead of Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie for the most money annually at $31.1 million per year.
It's a tricky situation for the Patriots to navigate, but given the exceptional talent of the player, it isn't surprising they have reached this point.
