Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Mansoor Delane missed the team's mandatory minicamp with a shoulder injury , but the rookie blue-chipper squashed any fears around his long-term status.
Delane met with the media at the Chiefs' training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Saturday, July 25, and said that he believes he'll be back to 100% "sometime soon, for sure." The former LSU star is wearing a yellow non-contact jersey during practice in the meantime.
"That's something that's gonna be hard for me to turn down — my aggression," Delane said. "But, obviously, you gotta be smart. It's the NFL . You gotta protect your teammates, so that's the most important thing."
Quarterbacks and rookies clocked in for training camp over the weekend, with the veterans joining the team on Wednesday, July 29.
The Chiefs traded up from No. 9 to No. 6 overall to select Delane in the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23. Cornerback became a glaring need after the Chiefs traded All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champion Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in March.
Kansas City also lost star cornerback Jaylen Watson to the Rams in free agency, so the expectation is for Delane to be an immediate impact starter for a revamped Chiefs defense, and he's embracing the pressure.
"To whom much is given, much is expected," Delane said. "I'm the guy they picked first. I'm the guy they gave this position to, so I can't really complain when the task comes with it."
"I'm a guy who likes to be underdog, and even though I feel like the spotlight could be on me, I still have an underdog mindset," Delane added. "It's crazy, but I feel like I'm competing to get a starting job. I'm competing to be out there. I don't feel like I've been given anything yet."
