See the full story · 5 sourcesThe San Francisco 49ers shocked the NFL world over the weekend when they announced that head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident that would keep him from leading the team through the early parts of training camp.
After reports followed over the next couple of days, Shanahan brought local media into his office on Tuesday to set the record straight.
According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Shanahan clarified that the car accident, which reportedly almost cost him his eye, was his fault. The 46-year-old said he took his eyes off the road to find his cell phone, which had fallen between the seats. When he refocused, he was driving into oncoming traffic and right into a 21-year-old woman driving an SUV.
Shanahan has been seen on the practice fields during the team's first two days of training camp while assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster runs things in the meantime. General manager John Lynch explained over the weekend that Shanahan will go through a similar protocol that their players do.
