“One of the Best Pre-Seasons” – Chris Wilder Makes Sheffield United Admission As Birmingham Clash Approaches
Sheffield United welcome Birmingham City to Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon as the Blades finally get their 2026/27 Championship campaign underway.
Chris Wilder’s side will be determined to make a far better start than they did 12 months ago under Ruben Selles, when United suffered a disastrous 4-1 defeat against Bristol City on the opening day.
That result proved to be an early warning sign of what was to come under Ruben Selles. The Spanish manager oversaw defeats in each of his next four league matches before his brief reign came to an end following a humiliating 5-0 loss away at Ipswich Town.
Wilder was subsequently brought back for a third spell at the helm, but while there were plenty of encouraging signs in attack, consistency remained a major problem throughout the campaign.
United ultimately finished 13th in the Championship, leaving them with plenty to improve upon heading into a new season.
United will begin the new campaign without Gustavo Hamer , with the Dutch playmaker having completed his return to Coventry City in a deal worth a reported £6 million plus add-ons.
His departure leaves a significant hole in Wilder’s squad, but the Blades have already moved to strengthen the midfield area with the season-long loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Phillips returns to Bramall Lane after a short spell with United earlier this year and Wilder is confident the experienced midfielder can rediscover his best form in South Yorkshire.
Sheffield United Boss on Recent Transfer Activity
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s opener in his pre-match press conference , Wilder admitted Hamer’s departure was inevitable but insisted United must now focus on what they can control.
“I wish Gus all the best, I enjoyed working with him,” Wilder said. “It was always inevitable that what would happen happened. We go onto what we can control and what players we can bring in and I’m obviously delighted to bring in Kalvin.”
Wilder also explained that Phillips’ arrival made financial sense for the club, while acknowledging the midfielder’s injury history.
“The deal suits us financially, and the player suits us culturally. We understand his injury record, but there’s provisions put in there contractually. It doesn’t harm the football club, and he deserves a bit of luck along the way.
“We’ve brought in a midfield player that if we get him up to speed he will be arguably the best midfield player in the division.”
Can Phillips Reach His Best Again?
Phillips endured a difficult period with injuries and limited game time in recent seasons, but Wilder believes there is no reason why the 30-year-old cannot return to his previous levels.
“Yeah why not,” Wilder said. “You look at players now, at 29, 30, they’ve not got two or three years left. You look at the way they look after themselves, the scientific nature of the business now.
“You look at Kalvin’s ability and personality. He wants to win, he wants to play football. He could quite easily retire and do whatever he wants to. But he doesn’t.
“He’s wanting to put on a shirt and be on the pitch when the bullets are firing and be involved in a team that hopefully has a successful season.”
Replacing Hamer Remains a Priority
While Phillips provides United with another option in midfield, Wilder accepts that replacing Hamer’s creativity and influence on a permanent basis is likely to prove extremely difficult given the club’s financial situation.
“Incredibly difficult,” he admitted. “We’ve talked about it. We’re not going in for a permanent one because you’re talking £10 million plus.
“I came out and talked about this is our first season of parachute payments. We have to deal with that situation financially. That will be a loan [to replace Hamer’s quality].”
Wilder revealed that the club are continuing to assess their options but will not rush into making a decision.
“We’re waiting. There’s some players out there that we’re looking at, but we have to be patient with it. Getting the right one position wise, and even though we’re not receiving parachute payments we’re still an attractive club to come to.
“30-odd thousand at Bramall Lane, a competitive side that will go well. I’m liking the place that we’re in at the moment, but I want to improve it.”
The United boss is also encouraged by the work done during pre-season, describing it as one of the best preparations he has experienced during his time at the club.
“We’ve had a really good pre-season. I would go on record to say, I’m setting myself up here as I always do, we’ve had one of the best pre-seasons that I’ve ever had in my period here. But that’s all irrelevant if we don’t get out of the traps on Saturday.
“It’s not the be all and end all if we don’t get a result but we want to make a good impression with this new group. But all the questions I’ve asked this group they’ve answered, but now they’ve got to answer on the biggest stage which is Saturday afternoon.”
Souttar Situation Remains Unresolved
With the number six shirt currently vacant, Wilder was also asked about the club’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the squad, including the situation surrounding Leicester City defender Harry Souttar .
The United boss refused to be drawn into the transfer speculation, insisting his immediate priority is preparing his players for Birmingham.
“The job is me preparing the team most importantly for the game on Saturday whilst dealing with the chaos of the transfer window being open, which in my opinion is just ridiculous,” Wilder said.
“I’m a football manager, I want to coach, I want to manage. There’s a process happening at the time to try and improve our squad.
“Every manager in this division I believe will say they don’t enjoy this period because of the uncertainty. We want to concentrate on football.”
