The Washington Commanders already had a deep rotation of edge rushers, but after former second-round pick Drake Jackson was placed on IR with a hamstring injury, the team brought in another former second-round pick to bolster the pass rush: Boogie Basham.
The Commanders signed Basham on Tuesday after he worked out for the team the day before. He arrives after a recent stint with another Washington-based team, the UFL's DC Defenders. He appeared in 12 games with the Defenders over the spring and racked up 28 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Prior to that, Basham spent five seasons in the NFL bouncing around the league after arriving in Buffalo as a second-round pick (No. 61 overall) in 2021.

When the Bills drafted Basham five years ago, he was viewed as one of the best defensive ends in his class and a potential centerpiece in Buffalo for years to come. But things quickly fizzled out. He appeared in just eight games as a rookie and was traded to the Giants two years later. After two seasons in New York, he signed with the Panthers, only to appear in three games before being released.
Across five NFL seasons, Basham has appeared in 43 games and produced 61 combined tackles, six tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and an interception, with most of that production coming in his first two seasons in Buffalo.
Now with the Commanders, he'll be tasked with providing valuable depth for a team looking to clinch its first NFC East title since 2020. With Jer'Zhan Newton set to miss most of the season with a torn pec, Tim Settle Jr. still working his way back from a recent calf strain, and other injuries across the defensive line, Basham could play a meaningful role for Washington in 2026.
