The New England Patriots are ready to offer their first extended look at the roster they hope can produce another memorable season. New England will open its three-game preseason slate against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium on Thursday night. Although many established starters are unlikely to remain on the field for long, the exhibition opener will give Patriots fans an opportunity to become familiar with the team’s new additions and roster-bubble candidates.
Drake Maye remains the face of the franchise, but New England’s roster is no longer built solely around its young quarterback. The Patriots have surrounded Maye with proven playmakers, invested heavily in the offensive line and assembled a defense featuring impact players at every level.
Here are some of the biggest names to watch throughout the preseason.
Drake Maye Leads New-Look Patriots Offense
Maye, who will continue wearing No. 10, is not expected to receive a heavy preseason workload. Every snap he does play will still be worth watching.
The Patriots have dramatically upgraded the personnel surrounding their quarterback. A.J. Brown headlines the receiving corps and will wear No. 1. Brown gives New England an established No. 1 receiver capable of winning contested catches, creating yards after contact and drawing extra attention from opposing defenses.
Romeo Doubs, who will wear No. 87, supplies another proven option on the outside. DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins also return as familiar names, while Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III are among the younger receivers attempting to earn roles.
TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson give New England two notable options in the backfield. Henderson’s explosiveness makes him one of the roster’s most intriguing offensive players, while Stevenson offers experience and physicality.
The competition behind them could be significant. Terrell Jennings, Jam Miller, Lan Larison, Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty are fighting for limited roster spots.
Hunter Henry remains Maye’s most experienced tight end. The Patriots also will evaluate Jack Westover, C.J. Dippre, Eli Raridon, Tanner Arkin and Mitch Van Vooren during the preseason.
Patriots Have Major Names Along Offensive Line
New England has made protecting Maye one of its clear priorities. Will Campbell will wear No. 66 and enter the season as one of the most important players on the roster. The young left tackle has the responsibility of protecting Maye’s blind side and helping stabilize a position that created problems for New England in previous seasons.
Campbell is joined by an experienced group featuring Alijah Vera-Tucker at left guard, Mike Onwenu at right guard and Morgan Moses at right tackle. Jared Wilson is listed at center. That projected group has the potential to be one of New England’s greatest areas of improvement. The preseason also will provide opportunities for Marcus Bryant, Caleb Lomu, James Hudson III, Ben Brown and other reserves to demonstrate their versatility.
Injuries inevitably test offensive-line depth during the regular season. That makes the competition for backup jobs more important than it might appear during an August exhibition game.
Christian Gonzalez Headlines Talented Defense
Christian Gonzalez remains the centerpiece of New England’s secondary. The No. 0 jersey should be easy to find whenever Gonzalez is on the field. The young cornerback has established himself as one of the Patriots’ most valuable defensive players and gives the coaching staff someone capable of matching up with an opponent’s top receiver.
Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis III joins Gonzalez in what could become an imposing starting tandem. Marcus Jones offers playmaking ability in the secondary and on special teams, while Marcellas Dial Jr., Kindle Vildor, Charles Woods and several other defensive backs will compete for depth roles.
The Patriots also feature considerable experience at safety. Kevin Byard III is the most recognizable name in that room, while Craig Woodson, Dell Pettus, Mike Brown and Brenden Schooler round out the competition.
Up front, Christian Barmore and Milton Williams provide strength in the middle of the defensive line. Harold Landry III and Dre’Mont Jones headline the group of edge defenders.
Robert Spillane brings veteran leadership at linebacker. Bradyn Swinson, Gabe Jacas and Joshua Farmer are among the younger defensive players who could use the preseason to force their way into larger roles.

Preseason Will Determine Final Roster Spots
The stars will attract the most attention, but the preseason is particularly meaningful for players further down the depth chart. New England must eventually reduce its roster before the regular season. Performances in practice matter, but live preseason snaps can help settle close competitions at wide receiver, running back, cornerback and along both lines.
Special teams also will be crucial. Kicker Andy Borregales, punter Bryce Baringer, long snapper Julian Ashby and core special-teamer Schooler are among the specialists on the roster.
The Patriots already know Maye, Brown, Gonzalez and Barmore will play central roles. The next three games will help determine which lesser-known players earn the chance to join them when the results begin to count.
