See the full story · 2 sourcesNEW YORK — The Mets are hoping that Freddy Peralta can finally find the confidence that has permeated his professional career.
The two-time All-Star's first season in New York has rattled that belief as he's sputtered to a 5-9 record and 5.01 ERA. Peralta could soon be on the move ahead of the upcoming Aug. 3 trade deadline but only if he proves a shade of his past form.
Mets interim manager Andy Green said he hopes that Peralta can return to the mindset of expecting to dominate and handle being "punched in the mouth." That will be the test as the right-hander looks to get back on the right track against the Dodgers (67-38), Major League Baseball's top team, in the teams' series finale at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday at Citi Field.
"You're going to get punched at some point in time today and our ability to take that with resilience and conviction separates the results by the end of the day," Green said. "It gives us what we're after. I don't think collectively we can look at ourselves in the mirror and say we've done a good job at that. We have to get better at that."
The Mets will be looking to avoid a series sweep and a fourth straight loss on Sunday. At 43-62, they are at their low water mark of the season.
The Dodgers will have Emmet Sheehan on the mound, who has had similar struggles to Peralta. Sheehan enters the day with a 4-7 record and a 5.13 ERA.
