One of the more interesting developments coming out of Miami Dolphins training camp has been the emergence of wide receiver Caleb Douglas. The rookie has reportedly been one of the biggest stories in camp so far, and he's starting to make a real case for a much bigger role than anyone might've expected when camp started.
Dolphins reporter Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post praised Douglas' combination of size and body control, while pointing out that he still needs to become more consistent at securing the football. That's a small problem for a young receiver, and it's usually fairly easy to correct.
Douglas is currently competing with Malik Washington, Jalen Tolbert and Tutu Atwell for a starting spot in Miami's receiver rotation. There are opportunities available, and Douglas appears to be taking advantage of them.

The Dolphins have some uncertainty at wide receiver heading into the season, which makes this competition particularly important. A player who can establish himself during camp could go from fighting for snaps to becoming a regular part of the offense once the games begin.
For Douglas, the next step is simple: keep making plays while cleaning up the mistakes. The occasional bobble isn't going to erase a strong camp, but receivers don't get many second chances once the ball is in their hands. If Douglas can show that he can consistently finish plays after making the difficult part look easy, he'll make a much stronger argument for the starting job.

There's also an intriguing quarterback connection developing. Malik Willis is expected to have an important role for Miami, and if Douglas continues to stand out, he could become one of the young quarterback's more appealing targets. That chemistry is something worth watching as camp moves along.
It's still early, so nobody needs to start engraving Douglas' name onto a starting lineup just yet. But he's already doing what a young player needs to do in August.
