A major step toward player unionization in the college football world took place on Monday morning, and it should come as little surprise that the Stanford Cardinal were at the forefront.
According to Yahoo! Sports' Ross Dellenger, players at Stanford are establishing the first-ever chapter of the College Football Players Association, a move intended to lay the groundwork for eventual unionization and collective bargaining.
The CFBPA has been around for five years now, but Stanford is the first organization to reach the threshold of players needed to elect representatives and form a chapter, a move that will likely lead to more chapters and accelerate the path toward unionization and collective bargaining.
"The time is now to do something," said Stanford offensive lineman Fisher Anderson. "This is college football, and it's increasingly becoming more like the NFL. At some point, we're likely going to need a CFBPA."
With the endless changes that college football has seen over the past decade, from name, image, and likeness, the transfer portal, and conference realignment, there has been a need for oversight from somewhere, and with players at the center of it all, the need is growing quickly.
"Just like the NFLPA, we could have collective bargaining with these conferences and could have a collective bargaining agreement that would standardize the issues of controversy we're seeing around college football," said Stanford defensive lineman Benedict Umeh.
According to Dellenger, the CFBPA is in talks with players from three other schools and is hopeful that more announcements about additional chapters are coming soon.
