But according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, the two sides have agreed to hold off on long-term contract negotiations until the regular season. This decision allows Davis to analyze his fit with the team, and gives the Wizards an opportunity to evaluate the All-Star big man's health.
"The Wizards and Anthony Davis have mutually decided to table potential contract extension talks and revisit it and wait until they're into the regular season for that and see where the team is at," Charania reported on Thursday.
"One source described it to me as essentially an ability for both sides to allow the first 20 games or so to 'marinate' and allow both sides to get to a decision on whether there will be a contract extension or not," Charania continued. "There are questions about Anthony Davis's health, how he performs, and their ability to take the next step and make that jump.
"Once they move past the unknowns, that will give both sides the ability to decide whether this relationship will go toward an extension or potentially something else."
The Wizards acquired Davis in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks last season. Davis never played for Washington as he continued to recover from a hand injury.
The Wizards, who finished the 2025-26 season with a league-worst 17-65 record, should be poised for significant improvement this coming season with the additions of Davis, Trae Young and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa.
