“It was very close” Jeremy Monga breaks silence on nearly joining Arsenal
Jeremy Monga was close to joining Arsenal this summer after the Gunners established contact with Leicester City over a potential move for the youngster.
The teenager was preparing to leave City as one of the most highly rated young players in the country following their latest relegation, and Arsenal wanted him to become the latest promising talent added to their squad.
Monga had accepted Arsenal as his next club, and the Gunners entered discussions over a transfer fee after Leicester rejected their initial offer . Although Arsenal were the first team to make a serious move for his signature, they struggled to reach an agreement with Leicester, which eventually opened the door for other clubs.
Manchester City win the race
With Arsenal unable to finalise a deal, Manchester City entered the competition and offered more money than the Gunners were willing to pay for the attacker. As a result, Monga completed a move to the Etihad instead.
It was a transfer that Arsenal may feel they should have completed before City became involved, considering how advanced their interest had been. The England youth international has now revealed how close he came to joining Arsenal.
Monga explains his decision
Speaking about the situation, as reported by the BBC , Monga said: “It [Arsenal interest] was very strong because it was very close to me going there, very close.
“The main decision was probably the pathway and the club itself. They’ve been so successful that it was a no-brainer when City call. It’s every child’s dream to win trophies and be at the top with the best.
“Once I get the opportunity I just need to show myself, and once I do that, everything will take care of itself. I feel like, to me personally, I see myself at City more. I see myself in blue.”
Monga’s move to Manchester City represents another opportunity for the young attacker to develop at a top club. Arsenal will now have to continue searching for other emerging talents as they look to strengthen their squad for the future.
