The Boston Red Sox made a big move earlier this week when they acquired infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals in exchange for pitcher Connelly Early.
However, it appears that the Red Sox could be just getting started with the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline almost here.
In a recent article for The Athletic , Jim Bowden reported that the Red Sox have expressed interest in shortstops CJ Abrams, Zach Neto, and Jeremy Pena.
"The Red Sox are not engaged in trying to acquire Lindor. Instead, they have pursued CJ Abrams, Zach Neto and Jeremy Pena," Bowden wrote.
With this news, it is clear that the Red Sox are looking to find an upgrade at the shortstop position. Landing any of these three players would provide the Red Sox with just that.
The Red Sox's interest in Abrams is not difficult to understand in the slightest. The 25-year-old is having a fantastic season with the Nationals, as he has set new career highs with 27 home runs and 82 RBI. He also has a strong .295 batting average, so he is making an impact with both his power and contact.
Neto would also provide Boston's lineup with more pop if acquired. In 104 games this season with the Los Angeles Angels, he has 19 home runs. He also hit a career-high 26 home runs last season for the Angels.
As for Pena, he would have the potential to be a strong pickup for the front of the Red Sox's batting order. In 60 games this season with the Houston Astros, he has 11 home runs, 30 RBI, and an impressive .316 batting average.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can swing a deal for one of these three shortstops by the deadline from here.
