See the full story · 5 sourcesMuch was made of the Big 12's announcement that Monster Energy would serve as a conference sponsor for men's and women's basketball and football, with teams donning jersey patches that will result in an additional $20 million in revenue divided among the 16 teams annually.
That addition to schools' uniforms doesn't appear likely to be the final one, though.
Arizona State and the other member institutions will soon see more advertising, like it or not.
The Big 12, which announced the Monster Energy payout in conjunction with the football media days, was quick to point out that the deal didn't preclude individual teams from selling other advertising space on their uniforms as well. Some teams have already done so, while for others, such as ASU, that is still a work in progress.
A decision could come in the next few months. The Sun Devils open their football season Sept. 5 at Mountain America Stadium against Morgan State.
Among those with a head start in the branding market is Notre Dame, which has reportedly reached a multiyear deal with SoFi Technologies that will place the financial services company's brand on the school's jerseys in every sport starting this season, a move announced by the school on July 28.
The six-year deal is worth about $18 million to $20 million per year, according to industry sources, and is believed to be the richest in college athletics history.
Then there is Ohio State, which announced a record jersey patch deal with JPMorgan Chase. That deal falls slightly behind Notre Dame at $17 million per year for sponsorship on all athletic uniforms. The institution will reportedly pay Ohio State $17 million a year in exchange for having its logo on the jerseys of the university's 36 sports teams. That agreement will also reportedly include NIL opportunities for the school's athletes.
