San Diego Padres infielder Luis Rengifo is out for the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL in Saturday's 7-6 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Padres placed him on the injured list after he suffered a non-contact injury and a cart took him off the field. In the seventh inning of Saturday's game, Rengifo caught a relay throw from second and began chasing Rays baserunner Taylor Walls towards third.
Rays outfielder Cedric Mullins broke for home with Rengifo doing so, so Rengifo awkwardly slung the ball home across his body and fell to the ground. Three runs scored on the play, but that wasn't the Padres' biggest concern.
Rengifo, 29, joined the Padres midway through the season, signing a minor-league contract after the Milwaukee Brewers released him in June. He made his debut for the team July 10, and immediately made an impact with the Padres.
Through the end of July, Rengifo had a .381/.469/.571 slash line with the team, though his results tailed off a little bit afterwards. He still has solid numbers as a Padre, hitting four homers and driving in 17 runs with a .784 OPS through 38 games played so far.
Rengifo, originally an infielder, took on an entirely new role with the Padres after they called him up. Of his 38 games this season, Rengifo played left field in 22 of them.
He also featured at second and third base, as well as designated hitter.
Rengifo landed on the injured alongside Gavin Sheets, another player who featured in left this year. Ramon Laureano has also been out for most of the year. Unlike last season, though, the Padres have put together some solid outfield depth, and have a few options to stick in left for the rest of the year.
Austin Hays, Dustin Harris, Jase Bowen and Samad Taylor are all able to play left if the Padres call upon them.
The Padres are currently 0.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Wild Card race, falling out of the final spot with their losses to the Rays. They'll look to reclaim the spot with a strong three games on the road to finish their road streak against the Cincinnati Reds. The first game of their series in Cincinnati is on Monday.
