Why in the world would an NFL quarterback wear a GoPro in practice?
"Yeah, so the GoPros came from [offensive coordinator] David [Blough], and it definitely gives insight," head coach Dan Quinn said. "There's also volume on that. And so, hearing that microphone of what it could sound like in a huddle, what does the check look like? So, there's definitely advantages. It's not as effective for throws, like deeper down the field, so we're still exploring with it. But it gives another perspective in how to hear things. And so, as a coach, especially when you're on the sideline, hearing that type of communication back and forth."
It was an interesting idea from Blough, a first-time offensive coordinator and only in his third year of coaching. The former college and NFL quarterback could see what Daniels sees and have the young quarterback go through what he sees on each play. It's a smart concept, allowing the two to be on the same page.
What does Daniels think about wearing a GoPro every day in practice?
“Truthfully, it’s going back and hearing, seeing if you called the play right. I think it's stuff like that," Daniels said. "I don't really necessarily go back and watch it, because it's on top of the helmet, so it's not truly, my eyes might be somewhere else, but my helmet's that way. But it honestly helps you. Going back, you want to listen to it, listen to how you call the play, how you're calling the play, and make sure you're delivering a message, painting a picture to the other guys in the huddle to understand the play so we're all on the same accord."
Daniels and Blough are close. They grew close over the past two seasons with Blough serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach. Daniels trusts him. So, if Blough sees the benefit of wearing a GoPro, he doesn't need to convince Daniels. There can be many benefits of wearing the camera. As Daniels stated, it's good to go back and hear. It can also be good for Blough to see each dropback from Daniels' perspective and then question him.
Don't be surprised if more quarterbacks aren't wearing action cameras on their helmets in the future.
