The stellar performance that New England Patriots offensive lineman Greg Van Roten was met with by his current team when he went up against them as a member of the New York Giants last season influenced his decision to sign with the Mike Vrabel-led ball club this summer.
According to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, Van Roten stated before the media after practice on Tuesday that the defense that the Patriots threw his way in Week 13 of last season showed him something he hadn’t seen from many units throughout his career.
“We were pretty fired up to come here Monday night, play the Patriots, and everyone was chirping about their schedule, and this and that,” Van Roten said. “There's been a few games in my (11-year) NFL career where you play against a defense that just feels a little bit different. And that was like one of those games, where they just they were flying around. They were hitting hard. It was a very physical game very early on, and I've been a part of a lot of NFL games, but that one stood out.”
The Patriots defeated the Giants by a score of 33-15 in Week 13 of last season.
The Patriots’ defensive unit sacked Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart twice in the affair. Van Roten had to deal with the Patriots’ oncoming pass rush and free up holes for his offensive backfield throughout the game, which New England did a commendable job of going against.
Van Roten approaches next season tasked with helping the Patriots protect star quarterback Drake Maye. He is yet another addition that the Patriots have made this offseason, with an improved defense from the one that he faced last season also gearing up for the 17-game slate to come.
