FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason appeared to have suffered a significant knee injury on the final play of the team’s 13-13 tie against the Patriots in the preseason opener on Thursday night.
Mason was standing on the sidelines when the play came to the edge, and although he tried to move out of the way, Mason still took contact and went down to the ground in obvious pain.
Indianapolis doctors attended to Mason on the field and took him to the locker room for evaluation.
“He’s getting evaluated for his knee right now,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said.
Any further details on Mason’s knee were not immediately available after the game.
“He got rolled up, right on the sideline,” Steichen said. “We’ll see.”
A coach suffering an injury on an NFL sideline is rare, but it does happen. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was left with a bloodied face after a sideline collision with Marcus Mariota last season, and Broncos head coach Sean Payton suffered a broken tibia and torn MCL when he was the head coach of the Saints in 2011. New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham flew off the sideline and into Payton’s leg; Payton was forced to coach from the press box for a couple of games after the injury.
