Brentford Carabao Cup Team News: Callum Wilson Set to Feature at Birmingham
Callum Wilson is set for another chance to prove his ability as the Brentford travel to Birmingham City for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash.
Andrews confirmed the summer signing will be involved at St Andrew’s, fresh from making his competitive debut off the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur .
Wilson, who joined on a free after leaving West Ham United, impressed during pre-season. But it was only against Spurs that he finally got his first taste of competitive action in a Brentford shirt.
“Callum will certainly feature again tomorrow,” Andrews confirmed, speaking ahead of the tie. “He’s been excellent in pre-season. He’s got up to speed really quickly.
“He’s someone who looks after himself very, very well and he’s played a big part already behind the scenes in what we’re doing and how we’re trying to mould this next chapter.”
Whether that leads to a first Brentford start for Wilson remains to be seen. He is among several players who could benefit as Andrews looks to make the most of the depth the Bees have developed this summer.
Andrews Confirms Brentford Changes at Birmingham
Brentford’s trip to Birmingham arrives just three days after they kicked off their Premier League campaign against Tottenham , with another test at Leeds United looming on Sunday.
Andrews has already signalled his intent to attack the domestic competitions this season. The packed schedule now gives him an early reason to tap into the depth at his disposal.
“I think the squad will be used over the course of these games this week and the weeks right up until the international break,” he said.
“We have that depth, we have that quality. So many of the decisions on who starts are very, very marginal.
“Will there be changes tomorrow? Yes. How many? I’m not telling you, obviously!
“But we’ve got a really good squad that I’m really, really happy with.”
That level of competition gives Andrews the freedom to rotate, without having to rely solely on players lacking first-team experience.
Wilson is among those pushing for more minutes. Several of Saturday’s substitutes will also be hoping the cup offers a platform to stake their claim for a bigger Premier League role.
Andrews also had positive news on how the squad came through the Tottenham win.
“We’ve got them into a good place,” he said. “We think we’ve come through the game on Saturday pretty well on that front, so I think we’ll be okay with that.”
The challenge now is to juggle three games in nine days, all while keeping Brentford ’s Carabao Cup ambitions firmly in sight.
Andrews has called many of his selection decisions 'very, very marginal'. Tuesday’s tie gives those who missed out against Tottenham an immediate chance to change the picture.
Wilson will be one of them.
After his first competitive Brentford minutes at the weekend, Birmingham now looks set to offer the next step in getting him fully up to speed.
