Abrams, who earned the second All-Star selection of his career this season, has already hit a career-high 27 home runs in 102 games in 2026. He hit 20 in 138 games in 2024 and 19 in 144 games in 2025. His 27 homers rank fifth in the National League this season.
Abrams made franchise history during the Nationals' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. In his two-home run game, Abrams' 26th homer of the season marked the most by a shortstop in Nationals' history .
The 2019 sixth overall MLB draft pick passed the 25 home runs Ian Desmond hit during the 2012 season.
The Nationals lead MLB with 154 total home runs this season. Abrams and right fielder James Wood lead the team with 27 and 29 home runs, respectively.
Wood is only 23 years old, and Abrams is 25. But the young duo are one of the strongest hitting pairs in MLB.
This season, the two-time All-Stars became the second pair in MLB history to record 25-plus home runs and 15-plus stolen bases in their team's first 105 games of the season. Wood and Abrams are also the first pair of teammates aged 25 or younger to hit at least 25 homers in the first 105 games of the season, according to MLB .
“It’s fun,” said Abrams. “Me and Woody always joke around every day. It’s a friendly competition with homers and stuff like that. We’re just having a good, friendly competition to better each other.”
Both Wood and Abrams are under team control for at least the next two seasons. Abrams is eligible for free agency in 2029, while Wood will become eligible in 2031.
