Barnes, 36, announced on social media Sunday, Aug. 9 that he is officially retired from baseball.
“When I look back at my baseball career, there isn’t a single thing I would change,” Barnes wrote. “I was able to live out not only my dream, but the dream of so many kids who pick up a baseball hoping one day they’ll hear their name called. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.”

Barnes last appeared in the majors in 2024, posting a 6.75 ERA across 14 appearances with the Washington Nationals before he was released in May of that year.
The right-hander finished his career with a 33-30 record and 4.21 ERA in 467 regular season appearances. Most of those games came witjh the Boston Red Sox from 2014-22. His time in Boston included a World Series title in 2018 and the lone All-Star appearance of his career in 2021.
Barnes made 10 postseason appearances as the Red Sox marched to the World Series championship. He allowed only one run in 8.2 innings, establishing himself as one of Alex Cora’s most dependable middle relievers that October.

Barnes was credited with two wins in October 2018, in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros, and Game 1 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in each game.
Although Barnes only made it back to the postseason once, in 2021 when the Red Sox reached the American League Division Series, his reputation as an October star was burnished. Barnes had a 0.79 ERA in 12 career postseason appearances (11.1 innings).

The Red Sox traded Barnes to the Miami Marlins for pitcher Richard Bleier in January 2023. He posted a 5.48 ERA across 24 appearances in his lone season in Miami.
Barnes signed as a free agent with the Nationals after the 2023 season.
“Congratulations to Matt Barnes on his retirement from Major League Baseball,” his agency, ISE, wrote on Instagram . “Over an 11-year MLB career, Matt was a World Series Champion, American League All-Star, and he ranks third all-time in games pitched for the Boston Red Sox. Thank you for everything you contributed to the game on and off the field.”
