The Miami Dolphins’ rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez has been stirring the headlines with his training camp play. However, beyond showcasing his overall on-field potential, the second-round pick, No. 43 overall, is also leading conversations surrounding critical issues in the league.

During a recent conversation with journalists following a joint practice session with the New York Giants , Rodriguez touched on the nearly regular camp fights across the NFL. And for the Texas Tech product, brawls have no place in the game.

Things got heated during the Dolphins’ practice against New York as a scuffle brewed between both parties. When quizzed about the development, Rodriguez admitted that the athlete’s often played with passion. Yet, he wouldn’t approve of the brawls that seemingly sprang out of their emotional connection to the game. While speaking to journalists after a practice session, he clarifies that football remains the central focus of the show and should never permit physical exchanges.

“You have to play it passionately. Obviously, you don’t ever want there to be a fight. I don’t think that’s football.”

During the 2025 college season at Texas Tech, Rodriguez picked off four passes while leading the nation with seven forced fumbles. His remarkable feats earned him multiple honors, including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, and the Chuck Bednarik Award. He was also named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, alongside a feature on the First-Team All-Big 12, and a unanimous All-American award.

His unique leadership and playing style make him an instant contender for a starting role at Miami. Yet, for him, his biggest goal is to see the team win collectively.

Talking about contributing to collective play, Rodriguez registered significant contributions when his side faced the Giants on Saturday afternoon. He stepped in with the first-team defense after linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson got sidelined with injuries. Eventually, he ended the game with two tackles. And except for a tough moment in the first quarter when he tried to push Jameis Winston out of bounds but couldn’t stop him from scoring a rushing touchdown, he had a generally decent outing for a rookie.

Miami chose to sit most of the franchise’s starters for the game to help test the side’s depth while building its roster plans. Given the outcome of the match, there’s little reason to expect much from the entire Dolphins side in 2026. Hopefully, though, for their fans and community, they have more pleasant surprises in the offing.

To put it simply, the Dolphins were outdone and look set for an underwhelming regular season. The Giants won 26-3 in a victory that looked inevitable from New York’s first drive. The Yorkers scored a touchdown on their first drive and could have sealed it from the word go. Miami eventually averaged only 2.8 yards per play on offense, giving up 4.9 yards per play on defense. Meanwhile, the special teams did little or nothing to help, sealing another unsightly performance for Miami, which has only a few days to figure things out ahead of Friday’s preseason finale.
