The Detroit Tigers ’ offense continued to fight its way back Monday night, but each rally was followed by another response from the Baltimore Orioles.
Baltimore scored in five of the first six innings and hit three home runs to hand the Tigers an 8-5 loss in the opening game of a three-game series at Comerica Park.
Detroit collected 11 hits and twice cut a four-run deficit down to two, but the Tigers were held scoreless over the final four innings. The loss dropped Detroit to 50-57, while Baltimore improved to 52-55.
Keider Montero entered the night coming off one of his better starts of the season, but he was unable to establish the same rhythm against Baltimore. Montero allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits over 4⅓ innings. He walked one and struck out one. The Orioles put pressure on him almost immediately.
Pete Alonso doubled in the first inning and moved to third on a Gunnar Henderson single. Taylor Ward followed with a ground ball that scored Alonso and gave Baltimore a 1-0 lead.
A defensive mistake helped the Orioles extend their advantage in the second. Jackson Holliday opened the inning with a double before Coby Mayo reached on Colt Keith’s fielding error. Jeremiah Jackson drove in Holliday with a groundout, and Dylan Beavers added a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.
Detroit answered in the bottom half when Zach McKinstry tripled and scored on Hao-Yu Lee’s sacrifice fly.
Baltimore added another run in the third on Mayo’s RBI single, but Montero prevented the inning from becoming more damaging. With the bases loaded, Chadwick Tromp grounded into a double play that included Holliday being thrown out at the plate.
The Tigers pulled within one during a three-run fourth inning against Kyle Bradish.
Riley Greene led off with a double, Spencer Torkelson singled and McKinstry walked to load the bases. Lee brought home Greene with an infield single before Matt Vierling’s sacrifice fly scored Torkelson, cutting Baltimore’s lead to 4-3.
The problem for Detroit was its inability to follow an offensive rally with a shutdown inning.
Leody Taveras opened the fifth with a solo home run off Montero. After Holliday singled, Brenan Hanifee entered and surrendered a two-run homer to Mayo, pushing Baltimore’s lead back to 7-3.
Mayo finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Holliday went 4-for-4 and scored twice. Baltimore produced 12 hits, with Alonso adding a pair in the middle of the order.
Detroit again responded in the bottom of the fifth. Dillon Dingler singled and Keith doubled before Torkelson drove in Dingler with a sacrifice fly. McKinstry followed with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
Bradish did not make it out of the inning, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 4⅔ innings. Detroit consistently produced traffic against him, but Baltimore’s bullpen retired 13 of the final 14 Tigers hitters. Bradish struck out four and walked one.
Tyler O’Neill provided Baltimore’s final run when he came off the bench and hit Tyler Holton’s first pitch of the sixth inning over the left-center-field wall. The 400-foot home run was O’Neill’s seventh of the season and restored a three-run Orioles lead.
The Tigers’ bullpen settled down after O’Neill’s home run. Drew Anderson, Jacob Waguespack and the rest of the relief group kept Baltimore off the board over the final three innings, giving the offense an opportunity to make another run. Detroit could not take advantage.
Torkelson singled to begin the eighth, but McKinstry was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by Colton Cowser. Lee struck out and James Outman flew out to end the inning.
The Tigers also went quietly in the ninth. Vierling and Kevin McGonigle struck out before Dingler popped out in foul territory to end the game.
McKinstry finished with a triple, a single, a walk and an RBI. McGonigle, Keith and Torkelson each had two hits, while Lee drove in two runs.
Detroit’s lineup did enough to keep the game within reach, especially after falling behind 3-0 and 7-3. However, the Tigers never led and were forced to spend most of the night attempting to erase Baltimore’s early offense. The bullpen for the third straight day , gave up a home run.
The two teams continue the series Tuesday night at Comerica Park, with Troy Melton scheduled to start for Detroit against Baltimore right-hander Dean Kremer.
