The Toronto Tempo are facing some tough news this weekend, losing not one but two key players for the season with injuries. Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello told reporters on Sunday that veteran guard Brittney Sykes (foot) and rising forward Aneesah Morrow (knee) will miss the rest of the 2026 season, according to multiple reports.
Both Sykes and Morrow sustained the injuries in Friday's win over the Portland Fire. The victory snapped a 12-game losing streak. Morrow had to be helped off the court with a potential knee injury.
Recovery from those injuries will last beyond the end of the season — though in a small bit of luck, neither player will need surgery, the team confirmed to TSN's Chelsea Leite . The Tempo have seven games remaining after Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Aces.
Sykes had just returned to play after a plantar fascia foot injury sustained in June had kept her out for 18 games. Morrow, meanwhile, was injured less than a month after being traded to Toronto from the Connecticut Sun.
Marina Mabrey, the team's leading scorer, is also dealing with injury issues, and was ruled out of Sunday's matchup, as were Nyara Sabally and Maria Conde (both dealing with left calf injuries).
That left Toronto particularly short-handed against Las Vegas, with only seven players available. Developmental player Ornella Bankole was activated to bring them to eight players in total, but Brondello told reporters that, per the league, the Tempo can't give out a hardship contract, via Leite .
In its first year as an expansion club, Toronto held some early promise for a potential postseason run. However, that 12-game losing streak and some tough injury luck have tanked its chances of sneaking into the playoffs, and the team was officially eliminated from the postseason this week.
